Malai Kofta

Forget your calories if you wanna eat this royal dish. But trust me, it's really worth it :)


For the Koftas:-
  • 350 gms paneer [cottage cheese]
  • 3 tablespoons plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 4 green chillies, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chopped coriander
  • Ghee/oil for deep frying
  • Salt, to taste

For the Gravy:-

  • 4 large tomatoes
  • 100 gms fresh cream
  • 4 tablespoons ghee
  • 1 teaspoon red chilly powder
  • Salt, to taste

Grind the following into a smooth paste for the gravy:-

  • 1 large onion
  • 2 tablespoons fresh grated coconut
  • 7 cloves garlic
  • 2 green chillies
  • 2 red chillies
  • 2 teaspoons coriander seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 teaspoons khus-khus
  • 1" piece ginger
  • 2 tablespoons fresh coriander


For the Koftas:-

  1. Crumble the paneer and knead very well.
  2. Mix the paneer, plain flour, baking powder, chillies, coriander and salt. Make a dough.
  3. Shape into small balls and deep fry in ghee/oil till golden brown in color.
  4. Remove the koftas on a tissue paper to drain the excess oil.
  5. Keep the koftas aside.

For the Gravy:-

  1. Cut the tomatoes into big pieces.
  2. In a bowl, take 4 teacups of water. Add the tomatoes and let it cook till the tomatoes are soft.
  3. When cooked, blend the tomatoes into a puree and pass it through a siece to get a smooth puree.
  4. Heat ghee in a vessel and add the ground paste. Fry till the paste is cooked completely. [Till, it leaves sides]
  5. Add the chilly powder and fry for a minute.
  6. Add the tomato puree, cream and salt.
  7. Boil the gravy for atleast 10-15 minutes.

To Serve:-

  1. Place the koftas in the small serving bowls.
  2. Add the boiling hot gravy on the koftas.
  3. Garnish with fresh, chopped coriander.
  4. Serve hot.

Tip:- Serve with chapathi or rice. Serve alongwith sliced onion and lemon quarters. :)
